Anyone who runs in the Black Forest, Germany feels it immediately: this region was made for trail running. Feldberg, Schauinsland, Stübenwasen and Hinterwaldkopf offer everything a trail runner could wish for – breathtaking views, flowing singletrack and enough elevation gain to challenge even experienced athletes.
And yet, something was missing. Anyone looking for a true ultra-trail experience usually had to head to the Alps or the Vosges Mountains. Despite that, one of Central Europe's most beautiful trail running regions has always been right on our doorstep.
That changes on September 19, 2026.
How a Vision Became Reality
November 2025. On a sunny day, Pascal van der Moolen and Sebastian Lickert head out from Freiburg towards the nearby Kybfelsen. Once again, their conversation revolves around the same question: Why is there still no true ultra trail in the Black Forest?
At the very same time, Britta Schreiber and Sebastian Eckmann are asking themselves exactly the same thing. The minds behind the Black Forest ULTRA Bike and Black Forest ULTRA Gravel are passionate trail runners themselves, and their love for both the sport and the region has long been part of their DNA.
When the four finally connect, one thing quickly becomes clear: It's now or never.
Five Distances. One Legend.
The Black Forest ULTRA Trail Run features five courses that showcase every side of the Black Forest.
From the BFUTR 19, with 19 kilometers and 920 meters of elevation gain, perfect for those taking their first steps into trail running, to the BFUTR EXTREME, covering 104 kilometers and 4,900 meters of climbing for runners seeking the ultimate challenge.
In between are distances of 32, 55 and 76 kilometers – each with its own character, spectacular views and the climbs the Black Forest is famous for.
The course profiles leave no room for excuses: Hinterwaldkopf, Feldberg, Stübenwasen and Schauinsland – the icons of the Black Forest combined in one event.
Anyone familiar with the terrain knows one thing: This region should never be underestimated.
The BFUTR is officially sanctioned by the German Athletics Federation (DLV) and is both ITRA- and UTMB-listed.
Trail Running and Cycling – More Closely Connected Than You Might Think
It is no coincidence that the BFUTR grew out of the Black Forest ULTRA family.
Anyone who has lined up at the start of the ULTRA Bike or ULTRA Gravel already knows the feeling: Kirchzarten as the starting point, the Black Forest as the stage, and a community where the shared experience matters just as much as the final result.
That same atmosphere is set to come alive on the trails.
Because trail running and cycling share much more than just the mountains. They are united by a passion for endurance sports, a deep respect for nature and the belief that the best stories are created outdoors.

For us, the inaugural edition of the Black Forest ULTRA Trail Run on September 19, 2026, is much more than just another race.
